President Obama re-established the United States global leadership role in creating a secure tomorrow as he made his UN debut this past week. Speaking before the General Assembly, he put forward "four pillars" that he said are "fundamental to the future that we want for our children"- for a safer America and world.

The first pillar was "nonproliferation and disarmament," noting that we "must stop the spread of nuclear weapons and seek the goal of a world without them." He articulated specific steps to achieve this goal, including seeking Senate ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, strengthening the Nonproliferation Treaty regime and completing the Nuclear Posture Review, opening the door to deeper arms cuts and reducing the role of nuclear weapons in US security policy.

The second pillar is the pursuit of peace. President Obama stated that the most powerful weapon is the hope of human beings. All people have the right to live in peace with dignity and security.

His third pillar: There is no peace unless we take responsibility for the preservation of our planet, which acknowledges the significant potential threat to peace and security if the challenge of global climate change is not solved.

The fourth pillar is developing a global economy that advances opportunity for all people.

Later, the president chaired a historic head of state/government meeting of the UN Security Council as it unanimously passed UNSC Resolution 1887, committing to work toward a world without nuclear weapons and endorsing a broad framework of actions to reduce global nuclear dangers.

This week, the president, in articulating his view of the future, has laid the foundation to realize the ultimate necessity to eliminate the archaic institution of war itself as a means of resolving conflict.

In so doing, the world may one day recognize the mission of the UN as stated in the preamble from its charter in 1945:

"To save succeeding generations from the scourge of war ...
"To unite our strength to maintain international peace and security ..."

This incredible week of words and agreement must now be followed with hard work, action and enforcement of these and future agreements. Through collaboration and cooperation there is indeed hope for the future.

President Obama's speech is

President Obama's speech is a brilliant effort to reverse the dreadful course set by the previous 'president'. The American right wing is too arrogant to understand or care how important the UN can be in achieving world harmony. Indeed, judging by the virulent domestic campaign against Obama, US conservatives don't care about anything but power.

The rest of the world wants

The rest of the world wants the U.S. to co-operate, not lead. Failing that, just stay the heck out of the way and leave us alone.

If Obama is to be taken

If Obama is to be taken seriously he needs to give up all the wars for oil and bring all American military personnel in Asia home. His actions speak much louder than his words, and today's truthout article on pipelineistan shows his true colors as an advocate of empire.

Words mean nothing when we

Words mean nothing when we know there no action has been taken to secure our childrens' future. None has been taken in my lifetime. All I see is more suffering in the world.

Obama has failed already on

Obama has failed already on all four of his pillars. Even as he spoke his hollow words he authorized a new generation of US nuclear arms. The development and deployment of drones is also a pillar-breaker. The US is by far the largest seller of arms in the world. The pursuit of peace is a joke coming from someone who has expanded Bushs' warmongering and killing. New military bases in Columbia and Panama, expanding the war in Afghanistan, spilling into Pakistan. Not really leaving Iraq (troops that do leave are replaced by private contractors and mercenaries) Threats to Iran. In Honduras, where the coop government is represented by Hillary's own Lanny Davis, Obama will not even speak the words "military coop." Preservation of our planet? The coal industry uses Obama in their lying commercials. Ethanol, called a crime against humanity by the UN, continues to get huge subsidies. Many green groups have lost faith in Obama and now protest his policies. And the fourth pillar, global economy that advances all people? He did the opposite here in the US. The TARP and bailouts were top down and have further enriched the wealthy and left so many homeless, jobless and without healthcare (which he claimed in another silver tongued speech was a civil right). Bush stumbled and fumbled through speeches like this every now and then, they were quite meaningless except to hi-light the hypocrisy of US governance. Obama has used Hope as the ultimate con, what a perversion.

I kvell at this article, for

I kvell at this article, for I was in College studying international relations when the UN was just up and running in NYC. I also will kvell on the day that 2 new pillars occur that the US can activate all on its own. Mr Obama, stop OUR war in Iraq NOW. Mr Obama, stop OUR war in Afghanistan NOW. I know that the fighting in these two countries will not stop when WE stop, and I also know that each of these countries must make their own destinies. WE cannot and should not, be agravating their internal processes.

Obama knew about Iran's

Obama knew about Iran's illegal nuclear enrichment facility before giving his speech to the US Security Council, and he decided not to mention it, reportedly because it would spoil his "image of success". Our president needs to forget his image and deal with the real world, not a virtual one.
