"Stink Eye Politics" - Running Against the Republicans AND the Democrats: Why I'm Campaigning for Cindy Sheehan

I am in San Francisco this week before the election, campaigning for Cindy Sheehan. She is running against both the Republican and Democratic establishments, but more specifically against Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

As speaker of the House, Pelosi represents and leads the Democratic Party that failed to end the war in Iraq, failed to hold the president and vice president of the United States accountable for the lies in the war in Iraq, taking impeachment out of the constitution and "off the table," knowing about the torture program and refusing to make it public and stop it, voting for FISA eavesdropping on American citizens, OK-ing the $700 billion bailout and a lot more. She knew these things and didn't stop them.

In the summer of 2007 while we were in hot, dusty Crawford, Texas, for the third summer in a row protesting Bush's continuation of the war in Iraq, Cindy decided to challenge Pelosi for taking impeachment off the table. In one of her first statements upon becoming speaker of the House of Representatives in January 2007, Pelosi had said impeachment hearings would be too divisive for America. As recently as yesterday, October 29, she has said there is no evidence of wrongdoing by the administration. (Congressman Dennis Kucinich spoke for hours on the floor of the House of Representatives about the administration's criminal acts and many books have been written on the subject.)

In July 2008, Cindy announced that she was giving Pelosi ten days to put impeachment back into the Constitution. In those ten days, Cindy and a team numbering from 20-60 persons from Camp Casey traveled from Crawford to Washington, DC, stopping at towns and cities along the way to talk about the lack of accountability for criminal acts by government officials while in office (war in Iraq, kidnapping, torture, illegal eavesdropping.) When we arrived in Washington, DC, 400 persons joined us to march from Arlington National Cemetery to the House of Representatives, where we sat all day in the hallways around Pelosi's and House Judiciary Committee Chair John Conyers' offices.

Cindy, the mother of Casey Sheehan (who was killed in Iraq in April 2004); former CIA presidential briefer and US Army Captain Ray McGovern, and minister and ex-US Air Force Captain and Chaplain Rev. Lennox Yearwood, met with Conyers for over two hours, urging him to begin Congressional hearings that could lead to the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

They emerged from Conyers' office visibly shaken after Conyers told them that the Democrats were more concerned about winning the 2008 presidential election than about ending the war in Iraq or about holding Bush and Cheney accountable for their criminal actions.

Upon hearing the results of the talk with Conyers, 47 of us surged into Conyers' office and refused to leave until Conyers called for impeachment hearings. About 8 o'clock that night, the Capitol police came into his office and arrested all of us.

Since Pelosi had not put impeachment back onto the table, while in Washington, DC, Cindy announced that she would run for Congress against the speaker of the House.

In January 2008, Cindy moved from her home close to the Bay area to Pelosi's district in San Francisco and began her campaign for Congress. She relentlessly spoke at hundreds of civic events in San Francisco and attended meetings of virtually every organization in the city. In a short time, she became a visible presence in the city.

Running as an independent, she had to collect 10,000 signatures to be on the ballot, and despite all odds, she became only the sixth independent candidate for Congress from California to raise the required number.

Then the Democratic Party and corporate media machine kicked into gear. No mainstream media in San Francisco covered her official announcement for Congress and none have covered her race against Pelosi. Suddenly, the "peace mom" whose talks and appearances had been covered extensively in San Francisco around the country by the media - was iced out. Print, TV and radio interviews dried up. Only internet news media would publish her writings and cover her active campaign in San Francisco.

This week I joined the many volunteers from all over the country who have knocked on doors, held signs on street corners, passed out issue position papers and talked to voters about why Cindy is challenging the woman in the leadership position of the House of Representatives.

It turns out that the voters in San Francisco are just as angry as Cindy is about Pelosi's refusal to stop funding war, her knowledge about torture from briefings of the administration and her refusal to hold Bush and Cheney accountable for their criminal acts. From the informal polls I have taken this week of voters coming out of the City Hall's early voting station, Cindy's campaign against Pelosi has triggered a strong response against Pelosi.

It has been very interesting to see the expressions of longtime Democrats who work in City Hall as we ask them to consider voting for Cindy. They have the same expression, the "stink eye" on their faces, as the Republicans with whom we have argued in Congress over the past five years about the war in Iraq and torture.

In those moments, the "stink eye" reflex to accountability and to standing up to the existing political system reveals the real challenge - forcing the two major political parties that have been tacitly working together to promote and continue war and to hold no one accountable - to move over for real change in our political system.

    VOTE CINDY FOR CHANGE!

Why bother? Cindy has a

Why bother? Cindy has a great spirit and a beautiful message. But sh can never win. She's peceived as a crackpot, has gotten very little press, has almost no platform from which to deliver her message. My advice? Spend your time and energy campaigning for progressive candidates in close races who actually have a chance of winning - and making a real change.

Sounds like attacking your

Sounds like attacking your friend because your friend fails to attack your enemy as you would like. Not a strategy for success.

Pelosi has behaved almost as

Pelosi has behaved almost as a bodyguard for the Bush regime, blocking attempts to hold them accountable for their multitude of crimes. If Pelosi is not voted out of office, perhaps a true progressive Democrat can replace her as Speaker.

Wow, the most liberal city

Wow, the most liberal city in the country if not the world has the chance to oust Pelosi for her complicity in the Iraq war and all the other criminality and the Dems give the "stink eye?" Well, I guess that explains it all! They are criminals too! We must keep fighting the good fight! Obviously, we are up against some dirty fighters! Just the concept of the stink eye alone says so much!

If all the people in

If all the people in Pelosi's district who are fed up with crooked politics would vote for Cindy it wouldn't be a longshot, but a sure thing.

Cindy is working her ass

Cindy is working her ass off! She can totally do this. She has tons of support. If no one ever challenges the powers that be, they will always be in power!!! I'm with you, Cindy!! You can kick her ass right out of the House!! Go Cindy! Go Ralph! He knows he won't win, and she can win. She's going to win!

Good Luck Cindy! Indeed,

Good Luck Cindy! Indeed, there will be no change without cleaning up Congress. Pelosi has been a disgrace to democracy and is nothing more than part of the political establishment that got us in thus mess in the first place. OUT WITH THEM ALL! Including Barney Frank!

This is our time in history

This is our time in history for people with guts and an abundance of humanity to stand up. I'm glad there are women who will. Many women have risked lucrative careers and a lot more, and have earned their right to be heard, and not giving up the ' moral' path in the face of massive greed and corruption is Right. According to the Constitution, it is our moral obligation. Please make up for those who have forgotten or ignored this, such as the current speaker of the house, who has proven to be as spineless and immoral as most of the two parties currently holding " We, the People" hostage. Thank you so much for your brave efforts, your guts-please don't give up, you give us hope for a better planet for us all.

Good for Sheehan! I'm sick

Good for Sheehan! I'm sick of the current Democrat leadership masquerading as liberal or progressive. They should all be replaced with someone that is not lazy, complacent, cowered or incompetent when it comes to reinstalling the Golden Rule versus the existing law of the jungle that only Gold Rules. I would vote for her if I could because Pelosi lost my vote of confidence long ago when she stupidly said impeachment is "off the table."

I hope that Ann is also

I hope that Ann is also supporting and campaigning for Ralph Nader. For similar reasons, of course. Dare to imagine anti-corprocacy and and pro-peace political representation.

I have felt all along that

I have felt all along that the white house has some real dirt on Pelosi... that or she IS the weakest person to ever step foot in congress... the alone brought the Democratic party to it's knees when it could have been the most powerful it had been in 20 years.. She is such a Wus... but she, like Bush, has the lie while smiling thing down pat... hope she looses...

I am a longtime Democratic

I am a longtime Democratic Party activist who has the pleasure of knowing Col. Wright and have the highest respect for her courage and integrity. If I lived in the district, I would be voting for Cindy Sheehan, even if there were a chance it would result in a Republican victory. Let me make clear, I am NOT someone who believes a vote for Nader or McKinney makes sense, even in the "safe states." I believe both Nader and the Green Party's participation in the presidential races has been destructive and should not be encouraged by voters. There is no escape from the destructive "spoiler effect" under the US system. If we shift to IRV, ccome back and we'll talk. The particular conditions of the Pelosi-Sheehan race are significantly different. Progressive Democrats have to find opportunities for applying pressure upon Democratic elected officials to force them to do their job and stand up for progressive values. I believe a vote for Cindy Sheehan can send that message effectively, maybe even more strongly if it DOES result in Pelosi's loss. The Dems do not need Pelosi in the House in order to make progress. Her loss would be a wake up call. Vote Sheehan! And hug Ann Wright for me if you get a chance! Aloha, Ann!

Cindy can win, and I betcha

Cindy can win, and I betcha she will by handsome margins --unless the voting machines are doctored to close off all votes for her against Pelosi. What a wonderful person of spirit and grace Cindy will be in the U.S. Congress. I wish I could vote for her.

Sorry, but Nancy Pelosi has

Sorry, but Nancy Pelosi has been one of the most effective and courageous Speakers we've ever had... She will be my choice for president some day. Its so easy to be against everything, and help no one in the process. You remind me of the fools who supported Ralph Nader and ended up helping instead, the cause of the current Republican administration and thereby one of the most despicable eight year runs a party has ever had. It doesn't make you "cool" to be on the fringe. Sometimes the fringe is just another ego trip. Nancy Pelosi is a person of dignity, power, and grace under pressure. The system is healthy and it is working, so why not help it instead of hurt it? S.C. Light

Go Cindy Go!!! I am 67

Go Cindy Go!!! I am 67 years old and I have watched all my life as 2 major political parties have fleeced the sheep because th sheep are gullible, lazy and ignorant. As long as Americans are feeling no pain, they will not react. Then when they feel fear or pain, they will react by throwing someone else into the volcano (Korea, Viet Man, Afghanistan, Iraq) to appease the Gods. God blees our troops, but they are pawns.

What are the polls saying?

What are the polls saying? Here is what I found on google about sheehan vs pelosi: http://www.city-data.com/forum/san-francisco/406554-poll-cindy-sheehan-nancy-pelosi-congress-2.html According to this site sheehan leads pelosi but 'other' leads both. At least by this poll, pelosi appears not to be in the driver's seat, but this is an election and the dems can cook and election just as well as a repub, well, maybe not as well but yet still capable.

Suddenly I'm very proud

Suddenly I'm very proud (even though I didn't do anything) to have been at Pelosi's house one nice day after a gorgeous "Beach Impeach" event (I was in the 'A') where I heard Ann Wright speak. Hugs from Chicago, Ann.

I don't think that BushCo

I don't think that BushCo has any dirt on Pelosi, necessarily. It's not just Pelosi who's the problem...the bulk of the Democratic Party has surrendered to the neoconservative agenda.

Pelosi acts as a body guard

Pelosi acts as a body guard for the republicans because she is a republican. I cannot believe you and others have not found out a most important neocon trick of getting republicans to run as democrats so if elected they carry out the republican/neocon agendas. Leiberman comes to mind right off, and I believe shelby is another that ran as a democrat to defeat the republican and within weeks declared himself republican, and there are others. I would imagine that with another major turnover in congress in this election that there are some well placed republicans that will are running and will be elected as democrats.

I appreciate the efforts of

I appreciate the efforts of both Cindy Sheehan and Ann Wright in exposing the realities of the Iraq war and the Bush administration's grievous misdeeds relating to the conflict. I would argue, however that Mdm. Speaker Pelosi's determination to take impeachment (although very well deserved) off the table served a larger purpose. The ills of this country could not be healed by spending the last two years further dividing the electorate with an attempt to impeach an all too deserving president at the expense of feuling a Republican rejuvenation in the current election cycle. There is a time, and a place, for everything. I sincerely believe that Mdm. Speaker Pelosi recognized that. I am sorry, although not surprised, given her passion and connection to the cause, that Ms. Sheehan does not see that larger picture. I am more disappointed in Ms. Wright whose experience should give ample insight into the larger working of things.

As anonymous says, because

As anonymous says, because Sheehan has no chance of winning, you should .... "Spend your time and energy campaigning for progressive candidates in close races who actually have a chance of winning - and" ... and what? Maintain the status quo that has gotten us here? ~Dada (who wonders what IS a progressive candidate? One who promises to stop the Bush wars yet rubber stamps his every request to continue funding 'em? Go Cindy!)

I want Cindy Sheehan to win!

I want Cindy Sheehan to win! That would be great for truth, justice and the United States of America!

I would almost trade a Cindy

I would almost trade a Cindy victory over Pelosi for an Obama victory over McSame. It would probably be a bigger game changer for the future of American politics.

Pelosi's Duplicity Enables

Pelosi's Duplicity Enables Bush. As speaker, she had the power to block ANY Bush initiative by not allowing Bush Bills to reach the floor. Instead, she consistently said one thing and did another. Time after time, while claiming to be "against the war" on Iraq, she hypocritically worked with Bush to engineer the approval of hundreds of billions of dollars for that war, while voting against those authorizations herself! The list of Pelosi's duplicity is long and includes torture, abridgment of constitutional rights, spying on us, and the $850B handout to the very bankers who have crippled the US economy. Is this the kind of person you want representing you?? A vote for Cindy is a vote for INTEGRITY and a message to all the sell-out Democrats that WE The People will no longer reward their Lies.

I thoughy I heard twenty

I thoughy I heard twenty some odd months ago that a certain unknown young senator from Illinois had not a chance in hell of getting the nomination and that we would be better off spending our energies getting behind the sure thing : Sen.Clinton...Oh, yeah...and to beleive otherwise you had to be some kind of crackpot for real change only came from sure things...!

Oh for the love of reason

Oh for the love of reason can we please, finally, do away with all arguments that run "We can't do X [although it's moreal, or legal, or ethical or constitutional] because it would put the country through . . . " That jive argument gave us Viet Nam, the coverups of the JFK, RFK and MLK murders, Iran-Contra and virtually every evil going. It's precisely the failure to uphold the constitution which EVERY TIME leads us deeper and deeper into the crap. Let's put aside the Geneva Convention because blah blah, let's suspend the rules and grant clemency to the blah blah Let's face it, you're either a country of the rule of law or you ain't. Period. End of story. Over and damned out.

Cindy is no crackpot, but in

Cindy is no crackpot, but in my mind a true American hero. With people like her acting bravely and tirelessly against this outrageously corrupt political machine gives me a glimmer of hope for positive change and hope for America. She should run Pelosi out of Washington and I wish I could be so honored to be able to cast my ballot for her. Who needs the main stream media? Now is the time for us to start ignoring those media clowns once and for all. Power to the citizenry! Best of luck Cindy....you go girl!!!!

Rock the boat...not, To

Rock the boat...not, To F.CORNBREAD, S.C Light and other 'anonymous', : oh yeah another slight problem I have with Pelosi (voting record, leadership in the house, priority in choice of bills...) is that I don't see much of a difference with a republican in the same spot : I mean the MAJOR campaign promises have not been kept at all!

While I agree with Cindy, I

While I agree with Cindy, I am not against Nancy Pelosi. I think we need both of them in office. They provide balence that way. I am glad we have both of them.

"As recently as yesterday,

"As recently as yesterday, October 29, she has said there is no evidence of wrongdoing by the administration." Does anyone have a link for this? I googled it with various search terms and got nothing.

A vote for Cindy will be a

A vote for Cindy will be a vote for the republican candidate. My friends who voted for Nader still regret it. Let's give Obama the strength in the house that he needs to get the things done that the country needs! I agree with Cindy's frustration, but don't feel that this is the most effective way to end the war.

Way to go Cindy... You make

Way to go Cindy... You make me very proud. Hope you have much success and always keep your passion for what is right. We All need to speak up and be sure we are heard, even if it seems no one is listening. You are not alone on this journey. Thank you.

Revenge is not an option,

Revenge is not an option, though it would be good to see Bush/Cheney hoisted and roasted. But to what end? Hearings should be held after the Obama election, when there is a veto-proof majority, and when the duo can be compelled to testify. Pelosi and Reid should also be called to testify. And those hearings should be long, slow, and completely recorded, with full copies available to any and all who want them. Records should be seized. Offices should be invaded. Files should be impounded. After the election.

People really need to get

People really need to get over this "a vote for Cindy is a vote for the Republican" crap. The longer you believe this the longer YOU will have to live in a corrupt two-party system whose only purpose is to perpetuate the power and control of the elites. You're the enablers here. Get beyond your treatment of the political process as a religion, and let's move forward.

Dems just as bad as the

Dems just as bad as the Repubs. They try and use the same tactic they used on Nader. Any vote for an independent is a vote for the Repubs. This is why I will never vote Dem in my life, ever again.

I sent my check in the mail.

I sent my check in the mail. I hope everyone reading this article does the same asap ! Cindy Sheehan is a true & honest candidate and an inspiration to us all to do something NOW ! Winning is not even the issue. What if Rosa Parks (one woman alone) chose to go to the back of the bus ? Best Wishes Cindy & Ann Wright ! Keep up the great work. You've started something......

P.S. THAT IS WHY I will also

P.S. THAT IS WHY I will also vote for Cynthia McKinney . One woman CAN make a difference & start a movement. Since the electoral college votes for president NOT we the people , and they have been known to vote against the will of the people, I will vote for good from now on. No more lesser of two corporate evils .

I was always curious why

I was always curious why Clinton could be held up for impeachment for a minor sex scandal, yet Bush, whose policies have let to wholesale genocide, illegal wars, violations of the Geneva Convention, the dismemberment of our military, corruption by Wall Street and contractors, gets to be another teflon president. We don't need an election, we need a Tsunami of outrage to get rid of every last incumbent.

I heard an interview with

I heard an interview with Cindy this week. She's not going to 'go away' even if she loses on Tuesday-her campaign has already rented their office space for 2009 and they plan on running again in 2010 if necessary.

I would vote for Cindy if I

I would vote for Cindy if I could too. I was so proud when Nancy Pelosi took the gavel and then she totally let us all down. For her to say as of Oct. 29 that there is no evidence that Bush/Cheney did anything illegal is like slapping all of us in the face and being complicit in the destruction of the Constitution of the United States. The impeachment of Nancy Pelosi IS ON THE TABLE.
