Available Jobs/Internships

Truthout is currently accepting applications for two paid internships:

Development Writing Intern

You:

Are an exceptional and detail-oriented writer with a passion for social justice and/or politics. You're interested in online publishing and nonprofit fundraising, and you're ready to use your skills to further the mission of a fast-paced online publication.

You thrive on the challenge of distilling information from a variety of sources into compelling, high-level content -- you'd love to dive into sizeable, forward-facing projects like writing Truthout's annual report (example here).

What's more, you're keen to expand upon your knowledge by learning valuable nonprofit fundraising techniques and strategies with an organization that works day in and day out to make a difference in the world.

Us:

Truthout is a nonprofit organization dedicated to publishing and producing truly independent news and commentary on a daily basis. Our mission is to spark action by revealing systemic injustice and providing a platform for transformative ideas, through in-depth investigative reporting and critical analysis. With a powerful, independent voice, we intend to spur a revolution in consciousness and inspire the direct action that is necessary to save the planet and humanity.

Through both investigative reporting and trenchant commentary, Truthout fearlessly faces off with topics such as climate disruption; economic justice; militarism and war; education; reproductive justice; and health care and food justice. We work tirelessly to not only examine current injustices, but to also highlight movements for change and give a platform and voice to visionaries manifesting a more equitable future.

The Role:

As our Development Writing Intern, you will assist Truthout's Development Director with the creation of grant proposals, fundraising messages, annual reports and other written, development-related projects.

This 3 to 6 month paid internship requires 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday. This is a position with opportunity for growth and professional development, and comes with a stipend of $1,000 per month (in addition to an internet reimbursement and phone reimbursement stipend).

This is a fully remote, work-from-home position, and applicants are welcome from anywhere in the United States. People of color, women, queer and gender-nonconforming people are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

Working alongside our Development Director, you will spend the majority of your time writing copy for fundraising and donor-related communications such as grant applications, letters of interest (LOIs), annual reports and monthly fundraising messages, along with other projects as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Dependable;
  • Enthusiastic and passionate about Truthout’s work;
  • Able to successfully manage a large volume of work, complete tasks as assigned, meet multiple deadlines, and respond with flexibility to unanticipated requests;
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a very high level of detail;
  • Skillful at developing accurate, persuasive written arguments;
  • Able to adapt and multi-task;
  • Enjoys working both independently and as part of a small team;
  • Experience working with word processors (such as Google Sheets or Word);
  • Familiar with broader nonprofit fundraising landscape and/or broader independent media field;
  • Able to communicate in a friendly, thoughtful and effective manner via online chat, phone, video call and email;
  • Has reliable access to internet during specified work hours.

Preferred:

  • Some experience writing political or fundraising copy;
  • An understanding of fundraising best practices;
  • Experience with customer relationship management (CRM) tools such as Salsa; content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress; and content production tools such as Google Docs and Google Sheets.
