Hillary Brownsmith

Hillary Brownsmith was born and raised in lower Alabama. She left Alabama after three years of journalism school to work with and on behalf of homeless folks and people living with addictions in Atlanta, GA.

After volunteering at a Catholic Worker House during her time in Atlanta, Hillary moved to New Mexico to serve as a resident volunteer at a Catholic Worker House in Albuquerque. Her understanding of postcolonial theology, queer liberation theology, black liberation theology, preferential option for the poor, and the power of popular education was shaped by these experiences. She writes about a myriad of subjects but has a particular interest in the ways people pursue deep theological education outside of academia.

Currently, Hillary lives in western North Carolina with her partner and son. She preaches and teaches in a small church in the French Broad Watershed and is a regular contributor to Jesus Radicals.
