Air Force Adds Kids to Pentagon's Mandatory H1N1 Vaccine Program

About 25,000 children in on-base Air Force daycare centers will be forced to receive the H1N1 vaccine or face being barred from school, Truthout has learned following reports from concerned parents.

When a number of Air Force parents opened the November Child Development Center newsletter, they were outraged to learn that their children must receive the H1N1 vaccine. The newsletter article indicates that the Air Force is considering the H1N1 vaccine as part of the required seasonal flu vaccination.

The notification states:

Recently we received guidance from AF regarding the H1N1 vaccination. AF is considering the H1N1 vaccine as part of the required flu immunization. So, all children participating in AF programs must have the H1N1 vaccination as it becomes available. We are currently working w/ Public Health & the Immunization Clinic to provide on-site opportunities for your children to receive the H1N1 vaccine. There must be a minimum of 18 days between the seasonal mist and the H1N1 mist, so the Child Development Program cannot offer the H1N1 vaccine until mid to late November, since we just completed the seasonal flu vaccination. We will continue to provide you w/ updates as the H1N1 becomes available. Children MUST get this vaccine OR have a medical exemption on file. Please see a member of management if you have any questions or speak w/ your child's pediatrician! We are also coordinating to have members of Public Health available to answer your questions - stay tuned for more details.

A parent at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL, speaking on condition of anonymity out of concern for reprisal against herself and her husband, was disturbed by the complete lack of confidence and answers from the center's administrators.

"What I got was a lot of 'shoulds.' It 'should' be fine. There 'should' be no problems with the vaccine."

"If they're not sure," she said, "why should I be?"

This action follows an already controversial decision from the Pentagon announced in September to make the H1N1 vaccine mandatory in all branches of the military's program. That requirement has been put on hold because the Department of Defense's supplier, Novartis, has not been able to deliver the vaccine.

Last month, New York Governor David Paterson suspended mandatory vaccinations of a half million New York healthcare workers, citing a vaccine shortage. However, others point to lawsuits, protests and a restraining order as pulling equal weight in bringing the program to a halt.

Dr. Meryl Nass, a vaccine expert at Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, Maine, who is critical of the development of the H1N1 vaccine and its surrounding policies, said that although "soldiers are subject to mandatory vaccinations, mandatory medical examinations and potentially even mandatory medical procedures - their families did not sign up for this!"

Additionally, Nass notes, "Children need to be especially protected by society, as they are not competent to make vaccination decisions for themselves. This is why there are special requirements to be met before you can perform research on children. You can't bribe parents to offer their kids as experimental subjects, for example."

But for many Air Force parents, household income levels prevent them from finding a true alternative.

In testimony before the Senate Committee on Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee in June, Eliza Nesmith, Chief of the Airman and Family Services Division of the Air Force, stated that "over 50 percent of Air Force spouses currently work outside the home, and 77 percent wish to work outside the home. Typically, military spouses earn less than their civilian counterparts, even though 7 of 10 have some college education."

Nesmith's testimony highlights the degree to which military parents rely on the on-base child care available to them. Child care in the military is heavily subsidized on a sliding scale according to household income. Thus, parents who rely on the subsidized child care are forced to choose between transferring their children to child care they cannot afford or, at least from their standpoint, putting their children's health at risk.

A spokesperson for the Air Force defended the Air Force's action, citing the Air Force Joint Instruction 48-110: "As a condition of employment or attendance at these facilities, schoolteachers, childcare center workers, volunteers, and children attending DODñsponsored primary and secondary schools, childcare centers, or similar facilities are administered appropriate vaccines against communicable diseases unless already immune (based on documented receipt of vaccine series or physicianñdiagnosed illness) or medically/administratively exempt."

Additionally, the Air Force spokesperson said, "For immunization requirements, the Air Force follows the CDC recommendations, which are endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)."

However, while the CDC does recommend the H1N1 vaccine, a CDC spokesperson contradicted the Air Force's rationale for the mandatory vaccine stating, "We have no recommendations for mandatory vaccinations." The FDA, while not a recommendation-issuing body, supports the CDC's voluntary policy.

A spokesman for the Marine Corps said that while they are happy to make the vaccine available to Marine families, they will not be implementing a mandatory program because their jurisdiction to do so "ends with servicemen and women."

The Army is in the midst of developing an H1N1 guidance memo for its child and youth services facilities. Until it is published, the current policy dictates that parents are asked not to bring sick children to the facilities, and if child care center employees determine a child is sick, parents will be called and asked to pick the child up. However, an Army spokesperson said, "Nothing in our forthcoming guidance will require vaccinations."

For Nass, justifying a decision boils down to one simple fact: "Children are not soldiers."

For two years I fought and

For two years I fought and won (with the help of the ACLU) an exemption for my children to be allowed the use of Air Force base facilities without being immunized. The Air Force is in the process of revising outdated policies that do not allow for medical or religious belief exemptions. I am concerned with the lack of testing of vaccines and the dangers to children. No one has the right to force you to immunize or discriminate against you because of your beliefs/decision not to immunize. This is assault with a deadly weapon. The vaccine compensation act of 1986 has paid out billions to families of injured and killed victims of forced vaccination. A congressional amendment has eliminated ANY compensation for injuries/death as a result of receiving H1N1 to assist big Pharma in it rush to produce the swine vaccine. Educate before you vaccinate. Visut http://www.nvic.org// I will happy to share with Anyone information about obtaining exemptions against this illegal Air Force policy.

Hell yeah they should all be

Hell yeah they should all be immunized. What kind of moronic parent wouldn't provide a vaccine for their child? Not only do these moronic anti-vax parents but their child at risk with their anti-science views but put other children at risk by lowering herd immunity. Anti-vax nuts would cheer a massive epidemic of measles, smallpox and polio.

If the non-immunized

If the non-immunized children are kept away from the other children there should be no problem right. Go to a non-immunized day care. Non available. Open one. I wouldn't let any normal kid near such a thing, but with your decision comes responsibilities.

Ok, 'Hell, yeah' - step

Ok, 'Hell, yeah' - step right up and get yourself a smallpox shot -- you know, the vaccine we QUIT giving because the adverse reactions, including DEATH, were a greater risk than getting smallpox? Had the polio vax yet? We can start you on the live virus vaccine, so you have a nice risk of actually getting polio from it. Then there's that lovely anthrax vaccine - you might want to check that one out before woofing your "anti-science" crap.

Ms. Wood is repeating the

Ms. Wood is repeating the talking points of the ignorant when she goes on about untested vaccines. Why does she think they haven't been tested? Furthermore, why does she think there are dangers to the children, especially when compared to the dangers of the actual disease? It is space cadetry like this that is sinking our country further and further behind those countries whose citizens live in the real world and understand how reality works. No wonder everyone else has surpassed us in the ability to advance technologically. A phenomenon that doctors have noticed is that the population of parents who insist that their children be vaccinated is the immigrants from third world countries. These are the people who are acquainted with child killing and crippling diseases on a first name basis, and they aren't about to let their kids run the risks of being infected. The dodos who have no idea of what being sick actually entails and who lack the basic education to be able to evaluate risk are the dizzy broads making life difficult for everyone else.

If you believe in

If you believe in immunizations then your child should be protected. A one size fits all approach does not work. My son nearly died and has been permanently injured because of vaccines. I am not anti-science. I believe immunization decisions should be made between a parent and doctor, not CDC, FDA, Congress or any other government organizations. immunizations have cause death and injuries. No one has the right to risk my life or the life of my children.

Equating well founded

Equating well founded concerns about vaccine safety with being anti-science is just a weak big-Pharma talking point. You're forgetting the scientific fact that more people were damaged and died from the last swine-flu vaccine than the disease. Check out the criticism of the female scientist who developed the Gardasil vaccine regarding mandatory vaccination. Guess what kiddies, the science of immunology is still in its infancy. We don't understand clearly how the complex immune system works yet. Vaccine technology hasn't changed much in 100 years. Keep buying the main stream media pro-vaccine agenda and the industry led-FDA and CDC or do your own research to learn about the very real dangers of vaccines.

Anyone who has an H1N1

Anyone who has an H1N1 vaccination they don't want, please send it my way... I'm too old to qualify! As for the reason they don't give smallpox vaccinations anymore, it has nothing to do with the risk of the vaccine, it's because the disease has finally been eradicated thanks to that very vaccine!

I've had the smallpox and

I've had the smallpox and polio vaccine, not a problem there. It was required in my school growing up. Kids who weren't vaccinated weren't allowed in the school because they were a threat to the community. Clearly the ignorant anti-vaxer doesn't realize the millions who suffered before science cured society. As for the anthrax vaccine that's harmless too. Only someone ignorant of the facts and gets them from a intellectually devoid anti-vax website will have a problem with it. The scientific illiterates spread lies about a connection to Gulf War syndrome which has been debunked in repeated scientific studies. The anti-vaxers are ignorant and harmful. As I said before, they would prefer to see millions dying again. Maybe it's part of some eugenics program to weed out those who they view as unfit. Who knows what goes on in their tiny little, uneducated minds.

Thanks for this Allen It is

Thanks for this Allen It is tragic so many are brainwashed in this country to not question. Smallpox followed wherever the vaccine went Polio was never proven to be caused by a virus, never proven to be infectious or contagious - no one ever got polio from another close contact nor did a doctor or nurse get it from a patient. It is more likely from toxic exposure to DDT. When use of DDT declined, so did polio. You have to follow the money and have an inquiring mind. Those vaccines were not required in your school growing up because there were not vaccine mandates for school at that time. If science has cured society, why did deaths from illnesses (that now have) vaccines decline to almost nothing BEFORE vaccines came out. If science has cured society, why do we know have off-the-chart numbers of children with autism, ADD, diabetes, asthma, allergies and other diseases that were never before seen in children. Questions everyone should seek to answer before they are injured further. People have a right to make health decisions for their own families and not be forced. America is not free.

Texas Aggie, I know first

Texas Aggie, I know first hand the anguish of nearly losing a child due to vaccination. I have researched immunizations for 12 years. I am a highly educated woman (5 degrees). I am not ignorant. Long ago, I put my faith and trust in Doctors. Thought I was doing the right thing in vaccinating my first child who now suffers permanent damage. No more. Why would I risk the lives of my other children knowing full well the danger caused to my first? I now put my faith and trust in God and after careful study and research no longer believe in immunizations. If you knew how these immunizations were produced (aborted fetal tissue, green monkey kidneys, etc), you would be appalled. Mixing the blood and DNA of animals and humans is a recipe for disaster. I believe our maker created our bodies to fight disease naturally. I am not anti-science. I credit increased sanitation and other practices with minimizing disease, not immunizations. My un-immunized children have never had ear infections and rarely get sick. A huge difference from my first born. I encourage you to do your own research before spouting off Big Pharma talking points. We are all too familiar with travesties cause by medications not thoroughly vetted. Vaccines (especially those rushed to market) are no different. Maybe you can judge me if you walked a mile in my shoes. I would not wish near death experiences on anyone.

There was a similar problem

There was a similar problem back in the '60s with mandatory vaccinations for smallpox for military dependents, including chlldren. The military required boosters every year at a time when the State Department recommended one every three years and the World Health Orgnizatio suggested a booster every seven years. Failure to get annual boosters, as well as other required shots, was a basis for disciplinary action against active duty oersonnel and administrative measures against dependents. After deaths or serious side effects arose from these mandatory vaccinations, one military couple went to court. The military was forced to back down after expert testimony that deaths from smallpox vaccine were then exceeding deaths from smallpox itself.
