BILL BERKOWITZ FOR BUZZFLASH AT TRUTHOUT
"You see an illegal. You point your gun dead at him, right between his eyes, and you say, 'Get back across the border or you will be shot.'" – Chris Davis, head of "Secure our Border – Laredo Sector."
Chris Davis, a man who over the past few years has been deeply involved with the armed-wing of the far right, is calling for militia members to grab their guns and head for the border. Although Davis is claiming that his new project is aimed at drug cartels and gangs, it is not especially far-fetched to consider that Davis might be looking for a Cliven Bundy moment; making a name for himself by leading a platoon of armed militia members to confront the women and children from Central America crossing the Texas-Mexico border.
Over the July 4th holiday weekend, Karen Antonacci reported in the Brownsville Herald that a group calling itself "'Patriots' has put out a call for people to go to the Texas-Mexico border and help with a citizen militia operation called 'Secure our Border - Laredo.'"
Davis' vigilante project comes despite assurances from Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske, who recently told ABC News' Jim Avila that the Central Americans crossing the US border – now numbering 50,000 -- "are not dangerous individuals," nor a threat to national security.
It also comes against the backdrop of anti-immigrant activists in Murrieta, California, who received national attention after they forced US government buses full of the undocumented children to divert.
Kerlikowske pointed out that, "These are family members, these are not gang members, these are not dangerous individuals. I think that we all need to work through this problem together as Americans."
The Commissioner told Avila that he was confident that there were enough border agents to handle to situation: "[Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson] has just deployed an additional 150 agents to the Rio Grande Valley, and that is on top of the 115 that are already moving in. So I am confident that we have the resources."
"According to Kerlikowske, these mothers and child immigrants often to run towards US agents, turning themselves in and seeking detainment," Avila reported. "By law, border patrol agents have to take them in. Unlike migrants from Mexico — who can be deported almost immediately — US law requires that migrants from non-contiguous states, like Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, be treated as refugees and detained, evaluated, and processed through immigration court."
The Chris Davis-led 'Secure Our Border - Laredo Sector' project
Chris Davis, who according to Devin Burghart, vice-president of the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights (IREHR), "calls himself 'Spc Chris Threepercenter Davis' and 'Cmdr. Chris Davis,' is leading the group,
"Davis is a self-described member of the Threepers, or Three Percenters," Burghart pointed out. "The loose-knit network of small groups draw their name from the mythology that just 3% of American colonists were engaged in overthrowing the British."
According to Karen Antonacci, "A spokeswoman for the group, Denice Freeman, said the operation is a call for civilian militia members — both armed and unarmed — to voluntarily guard private property in the Laredo area and other Texas locations where owners feel threatened by 'drug cartels and from gangs, particularly the MS-13 gangs,' a Salvadoran-based gang that is considered among the most dangerous in this country by law enforcement. Freeman said she expected militia members to become visible in border communities, including the Rio Grande Valley, in the coming weeks but she wanted to stress that the operation's commander — Chris Davis — is warning members against using any violent means."
"This is not a 'go-in-guns-blazing' kind of thing," Freeman said. "This will be handled with the utmost professionalism and security and safety for everyone involved."
Antonacci reported that a 21-minute YouTube video posted June 14, features "a man who identifies himself as Cmdr. Chris Davis," and in the video, Davis offers up this piece of advice on how to secure the border: "You see an illegal. You point your gun dead at him, right between his eyes, and you say, 'Get back across the border or you will be shot.'"
"While Davis is garnering support among Tea Party and so-called Patriot talk-show hosts and bloggers, and raising a little money for his efforts, its unclear how many supporters will join him," IREHR's Devin Burghart told me in an email. "What is clear, particularly given recent incidents, is how dangerous this situation could become."
Burghart also passed along a recent Facebook posting by Davis, listing who was currently involved in the Operation, supplies they wanted people to donate, where they could donate to, all of which provides a taste of what the Commander and his troops are up to:
"The operation is LEGIT and this is a GREEN LIGHT!
