Obama's Done a Lot, but Gets Little Credit for It; Why?

Washington - Step by step, President Barack Obama is building a record of major legislation that's sure to make a mark on history.
The most sweeping financial regulation since the Great Depression. A vast expansion of health care, which Democrats had wanted for more than six decades. An $862 billion stimulus package that locked in long-sought Democratic priorities.
Yet his job-approval rating remains low. Why doesn't he get any credit?
First, the economy remains shaky. Second, he went farther with a big-government, big-deficit approach than some voters wanted, notably independents, who've turned against him. Third, he broke some of his own vows in the process, such as by becoming a backroom deal-making politician to get health care, alienating young idealists.
There's still plenty of time for Obama to recover and be re-elected in 2012, particularly if the economy rebounds, the unemployed start going back to work and people start feeling the benefits of his achievements in their lives.
For now, however, he's still trying to convince Americans beyond the beltway that his success in Congress will pay off for them. His fellow Democrats are worried that any eventual payoff won't come in time for their congressional elections this fall.
"I don't think he gets any credit on the economy. I don't think he gets any credit for passing the bailouts or his budgets or health care," said Brad Coker, a pollster with Mason-Dixon Polling & Research.
"I don't think he gets credit until things start to work. If they work, he'll get credit. They have to start working by summer or early fall of 2012 for him. But I don't know that there's time for any of it to work by this fall."
So far, Americans give the president middling grades.
Just 44 percent approve of his performance in office, according to the latest Gallup Poll on Friday, while 48 percent disapprove.
They lean against him issue by issue, according to a new Bloomberg News poll:
On the economy, 44 percent approve and 52 percent disapprove. On addressing problems on Wall Street, 42 percent approve and 50 percent disapprove. On health care, 46 percent approve and 51 percent disapprove. On the federal budget deficit, 37 percent approve and 59 percent disapprove. The biggest problem is that unemployment remains high and people are worried about their jobs, their paychecks and their savings.
His White House reported this week that the economic stimulus had saved or created about 3 million jobs. Some private-sector economists, such as Mark Zandi of Moody's Analytics, called that a reasonable estimate.
People don't buy hypotheticals, though. Obama said that unemployment would stay below 8 percent if Congress enacted the stimulus package; instead it jumped past 10 percent and is now at 9.5 percent.
They also don't see many benefits yet from such major initiatives as health care, which is being phased in over several years.
"It's hard to see how the average person can see any meaningful change in his life for the better because of these things," said Dennis Goldford, a political scientist at Drake University in Iowa.
The White House is launching a new summertime campaign to turn that around.
In a call with reporters Friday, senior White House adviser David Axelrod stressed the achievements of the president's record, and said the political benefit would take care of itself.
"His motivation was not politics. ... Someone once said that good government is good politics, and it's certainly true," Axelrod said, referring to a quote from the late Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley.
"There are things that relate to people's everyday lives that are going to change for the better," he said. "In so many of the things we've done, we've tried to address concerns people have in their everyday lives."
He cited the new financial regulations' protections for credit card users and mortgage borrowers, the health care law's guarantee of insurance for people with pre-existing medical conditions and the student loan overhaul's expansion of aid to college students.
Another reason Obama isn't getting credit is that some voters are balking at how much he's expanding the power and cost of the federal government.
On health care, for example, Coker said many Americans thought that the president went too far. They wanted changes, but not as many as Obama pushed through.
"They didn't want them taking over the health care system," Coker said. "Most people thought it needed some changes, but weren't necessarily ready to buy the whole package."
However, polls also found that a significant number of those who opposed the health care law did so because they thought it didn't go far enough; many preferred a government-run public option insurance plan, for example, but the law didn't include one.
Finally, in the process of getting his way, Obama's been more Lyndon Johnson than Jimmy Carter.
To get health care, for example, he broke his own pledge to conduct all negotiations on C-SPAN, and he and his Democratic allies cut deals for votes behind closed doors. Young people, who'd voted for Obama in 2008 to change politics, tuned out.
"He ran against the good old boy politics. But to get things done, he's played legislative hardball," Coker said. "So even on style points, he loses for getting most of his agenda through."

Do you really believe Obama
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 15:07 — Anonymous (not verified)Do you really believe Obama has accomplished something. Healthcare "reform" is just a giveaway to big insurance with no cap on premiums. And since it will be government subsidized, expect premiums to skyrocket even further. How can there NOT be a "public option? Is financial reform really meaningful? I highly doubt it. All those banks didn't give Obama's campaign and an army of lobbyists millions (or is it billions?) for nothing. 1600 Pennsylvania avenue is now the new address for Goldman Sachs top operatives. I think most people see Obama for the sell-out he is. Just like any politician, he will say what it takes to get elected, but when you get down to it, he will side with his corporate masters. The average American has ZERO representation in Washington. As for getting re-elected, I'm sure all of Wall Street will chip in to enlist the Bush gang to count the votes. This writer needs to awaken from his slumber and do some serious research as to the repercussions of Obama's "accomplishments."

Obama has been utterly ineffective or made horrible desicions on the biggest issues of his time. They do nothing and then blame Obama for not digging them out of the mess they created.
We are in an economic malaise because of Bush's policies of starting war and cutting taxes for the rich and making regulations a formality.
... What a bunch of jerks, Tea Party/GOP are.
Come on, now. Obama hasn't
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 17:11 — Anonymous (not verified)Come on, now. Obama hasn't accomplished anything noteworthy. The stimulus was woefully inadequate and he hasn't done anything that has any chance of improving the job situation. His health care bill is a giant giveaway to the health insurance companies and Big PhRMA, which isn't surprising since it was written by an insurance company insider who is also writing the regs. 23 million people will still be uninsured and thousands will continue to die each month before their time because they lack insurance AFTER the bill goes into effect in 2014. And then there's the damn mandate no one can afford, no cost controls, and no public option, which exactly the result he wanted!
FinReg is a bad joke and Obama probably won't appoint Elizabeth Warren to head her Consumer Financial Protection Agency because Geithner is throwing a snit fit about her embarrassing him for his conflict of interest shenanigans with AIG when he was at the N.Y. Fed that should land him jail.
Then there's Obama's unlawful and unnecessary war in Afghanistan using drones that have slaughtered more than 1,000 innocents.
And there's his war on civil liberties and his unwavering protection of the Bush-Cheney torture administration.
And that's just for starters.
I repeat; Obama has accomplished nothing significant. He's a terrible president. If I had wanted a Republican president, I would have voted for McCain-Palin.
Under no circumstances will I vote for Barack Obama ever again, or for that matter, anyone who supports his horrific record.
He deserves little
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 17:42 — Anonymous (not verified)He deserves little credit.
He gave away the most important provisions of the bills that have been passed--before the debate began. He made it difficult to discern that he had any principles or leadership skills. He's been more concerned about Blanche Lincoln and Olympia Snowe than about the progressives who elected him.
Now he's struggling to "get beyond" the Gulf oil spill that so clearly exposed his incompetence in approving offshore drilling with evidence cooked up the the oil industry.
He's an empty suit.
He deserves credit like he deserved the Nobel Prize.
McClatchy propaganda is a
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 18:16 — PublicAdvocate.com (not verified)McClatchy propaganda is a big surprise. Obama has exhibited his hostility for the health of the general public since taking office. The "bail out" was a swindle of epic proportions, the health reform bill is a cynical piece as deceptive as Bush's "clear sky initiative, trillions have been lavished on financial institutions while their victims are evicted from their homes and virtually every US industry being favored by the Obama administration is one hostile towards the citizens of this country.
There is simply no credible evidence to indicate Obama has any intention of discontinuing policies accelerating the decline of the US middle class or the plight of Wall Street's victims.
Obama is a wolf and his coterie proves it.
Obama was an unfortunate
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 18:45 — Anonymous (not verified)Obama was an unfortunate mistake even before his speech to AIPAC. He has been throughly vetted by big finance, and big defense. ie the people who run the country.
McClatchy is not a small, or independent media organization, they are quite large. They are also a cheerleader for austerity measures, like most corporations.
Steven Thomas, you are worse
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 20:12 — Anonymous (not verified)Steven Thomas, you are worse than a damned fool, you are a sucker, a sycophant, and a traitor. Stand in a line for food stamps, lose your home, lose a son to an illegal war, lose a child to an Israeli bullet, lose your family to Arizona heat while trying to make your life somehow livable, lose your freedom for speaking your mind, lose your land or your water and your means to live, then tell me Obama has accomplished a lot.
You are nothing more than a despicable shill for business as usual, and I can think of no better sentence for you than spending your life in one of America's offshore torture centers.
I'm so disgusted with lame
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 20:26 — Anonymous (not verified)I'm so disgusted with lame writers who continue to attemtp to sell the mainstream bullshit and pass this off as reality! Why does Truthout continue to provide lamebrain ass-kissers like Thomma a forum for their worthless, delusional perspectives? Don't any of these faux-analysts ever read? Don't they have any idea that the posturing of Congress and Obama are nothing more than fronts to maintain the status quo bilking of Americans and to promote the accelerating war on the environment in order to prop up the failure of capitalism?
This isn't analysis -- this crap is propaganda, plain and simple. If the editors of Truthout don't start paying more attention to the vile quality of deceivers, liars, facilitators, and apologists who get cyberspace here to peddle their pretenses and betrayals, they'll go on the list of people's enemies with the likes of MoveOn, Daily Kos, CodePink, et al., for coddling the criminals in Washington, at the Pentagon, and around the world in corporate boardrooms. Obama is public enemy #1 -- it's a role he chose, that he embraced, that he pursues like the corporate-war criminal he is, and there's nothing he has or will accomplish that will bode well for the people in this country and around the world. All posts here that waylay the truth about the ongoing destruction of this planet for the enrichment of the few are, in my opinion, treasonous.
Obama's refusal to prosecute
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 20:31 — Chap. Mikel Ryuho Monnett, BCC (not verified)Obama's refusal to prosecute the war criminals of the Bush regime and his continuation of the policies of secret prisons, rendition, and (probably) torture have allowed the Republicans to come back like they never did anything wrong, rather than hiding in shame until a decent interval has passed. Add to that the fact that, except for Elizabeth Warren, his economic team consists of "Sons of the Vampire Squid" and is it any wonder most of us are disappointed? Or that Ben Nelson, Olympia Snow, Mary Landrieu, and Susan Collins must be kowtowed to get anything through Congress?
Couple that with his surrendering the high ground before the battle is joined---on healthcare, energy, and Wall Street reform---and we have to wonder is the man remotely even competent at anything besides public speaking? Hillary at least has a spine; Obama has yet to show he does.
Obama is easily the best
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 20:40 — Anonymous (not verified)Obama is easily the best president this nation has had since FDR. He's also orders of magnitude better than any potential Republican rival.
It's funny that it's impossible to tell whether all the carping comments here come from right-wing "tea party" types or so-called "progressives". In terms of rhetoric, there is little difference at times--and that's pathetic.

Underachiever by my way of thinking, and while there has been change, corruption, lies and lack of accountability (including a failure to correct past wrongs through criminal prosecutions) just goes to show, a bit of change, but the same old politics.

Sun, 07/18/2010 - 21:58 — Anonymous (not verified)wow, what a horribly angry, vindictive bunch of posters. Just what the big money is hoping for, they will keep us divided and conquer. To the top 20% of earners, you have not had anything to complain about. Back in the fifties and sixties, you folks were taxed about 75% on your massive profits, gained at the expense of the rest of us. The majority of us are getting less pay, higher medical co-pays, higher interest rates, less job security, less raises to keep up with the cost of living, etc. All of that is our own fault for not keeping corporate powers in check and not striking, and continuing to patronize greedy business interests.

Sun, 07/18/2010 - 22:01 — Anonymous (not verified)What a sorry collection of armchair quarterbacks! Clearly President John McCain and VP Sarah Palin would have been SO MUCH BETTER! And today the majority of Americans would be SO MUCH HAPPIER AND CONTENT.
Governing this country of simpletons is really such a cakewalk. Aren't we lucky there are no monstrous special interest groups running the show? And of course, Americans would NEVER blame themselves for putting leaders like Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush into the driver's seat.
America has dug herself into this huge hole and now we can't understand why this dumb Obama guy can't fight Congress, the media, the multinational corporations (the REAL power) and history to make everything come right again. As far as I can see it, this country is getting what it deserves. The armchair quarterbacks are talking this benighted country even deeper into the hole. And there are so many of them we are really screwed.
WHY NO CREDIT..?? Are you
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 22:08 — Anonymous (not verified)WHY NO CREDIT..?? Are you kidding me with this article...
First of All--- America is now completely Corporate Owned and Operated.
Thanks to 30 years of NeoCorporate CONservative ConJobs, Republicans and Roll-Over-To-Get-Along Democrats and blind, ignorant voters working to bring ALL OF US a whole lot LESS GOVERNMENT (of The People) through a whole lot LESS REGULATION (of everything Corporate) and a whole lot LESS TAXATION (of the Global Corporate Class)----- THANKS TO ALL THAT..!... Almost All Media in America is now owned and operated and exploited by just a few gigantic GLOBAL Corporations, most of which are either Business-Conservative in Nature or flat out Politically-Insane-CONservative and lends its disproportionate Public Megaphone to a fringe minority to give it social and political clout and impact it would not otherwise have in America if Media were owned by hundreds of separate, different and diverse entities which were forced to operated in a Media Environment with a strong FAIRNESS DOCTRINE IN MEDIA as Media in America once was just a few decades ago.
Now, almost all pipelines for speech and our so-called 'Free' Press is now owned by just a few Global Corporations to do with as they please.. And they do..!
Our Elections are funded by GLOBAL Corporations...
Most Government functions are now contracted out to Corporations, many to GLOBAL Corporations...
Tell me.., since under our laws, Corporations are considered 'Persons'...., does a GLOBAL CORPORATE 'PERSON' consider itself to be an American..?
We the People are treated more as WE THE CONSUMERS to squeeze and manipulate rather than serve in what is supposed to be OUR Country.
How can ANY President operate and function on behalf of WE THE PEOPLE in an environment like this..?
WE have done this to Ourselves and it continues to happen.
Far too many Americans have been convinced by Global Corporate Media and their insane, self serving, Corporate Sponsored, wealthy Talking Heads that Our Own Government is something to hate and despise and get rid of and so, thanks to millions of their lemming-like, blind Hoodwinkees, we are getting rid of it through the starvation of relentless LESS TAXATION OF CORPORATIONS and the relentless DEREGULATION OF EVERYTHING CORPORATE.., both of which simply DIS-EMPOWERS AMERICANS and Takes away Our Control Over Our Own Country and Government...
Why is everyone so enamored with the Rightwing Talking Point of ''LESS GOVERNMENT'' anyway..?
Do they understand what it really means in actuality..?
Look around. Our problems have nothing to do with socialism and EVERYTHING to do with runaway, run amok Capitalism and Corporatism..
The Global Economy just collapsed because of ''LESS GOVERNMENT''..!
BP is an example of a 'Less Government'' Problem...
Hell-- even the Huge, Gigantic Deficits brought to us by BuSh and the Republicans is an example of 'LESS GOVERNMENT'...!!!
How about WE THE PEOPLE DEMANDING--- PRAGMATIC GOVERNMENT..!!! No matter how 'Big' it needs to be. In fact--- Let the Government start hiring again and cut off contracting out EVERYTHING Government... It would be good for the economy and those who will one day retire from such service. And if you ask almost any recent military retiree who had to work with Corporate Contractors, they will tell you that it costs taxpayers much more for much less than if the Military did it directly.
Our Military is now just a Global Corporate Cash Cow... So is much of the rest of Government in America.
AND HOW ABOUT DEMANDING THAT OUR ELECTIONS BE FUNDED WITH ONLY PUBLIC MONEY and THE MEDIA IN AMERICA BE BROKEN UP INTO AND SOLD OFF TO HUNDREDS OF SEPARATE, DIFFERENT AND DIVERSE ENTITIES....
WE WANT OUR COUNTRY, ELECTIONS, GOVERNMENT and MEDIA BACK FROM GLOBAL CORPORATIONS and SELF SERVING FRINGE WACKOS WITH MONEY.....!!!
To the person who just wrote
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 22:27 — Anonymous (not verified)To the person who just wrote that diatribe beginning with "WHY NO CREDIT..?" basically fleshed out what I just said ("What a sorry collection......). Thank you so much!! This is the truth, people.
McCain and Palin would have walked hand in glove with the monsters who have stolen this democracy. We would be even deeper in the hole if they had been elected.
But the inability of the majority of Americans to SUPPORT and PUSH our feckless leaders in the right direction is by far the greatest hindrance to change. The armchair quarterbacks are literally dragging us backwards, even as we were offered the opportunity to make real changes.
How many of the armchair quarterbacks in this discussion have even carried a sign demanding the so-called "public option"? How many armchair quarterbacks called their state representatives and demanded that they sign up for real financial change? I have, I did. At least I can count myself involved and engaged.
Why must we always accept
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 22:40 — Dupa Do Do (not verified)Why must we always accept the lesser of two evils? Either we elect a senile McCain and Brain Dead Palin or we get Mr. Gabby: Oh Blah Blah! Can anyone actually mention some Democrats that actually acted like ones? And don't bring up Kucinich who put his tail between his legs. He is like the thoughtful Nazi who had pleasant playful music for the kids that were going to get destroyed just so they wouldn't be """STRESSED""" The one thing history teaches us is that we don't learn from history. Bush and Oh Blah Blah land uber alles!!!!!!!
What a joke... that isn't
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 23:10 — Anonymous (not verified)What a joke... that isn't funny... at all. One can write and/or read this article and believe it if one ignores all the far greater damage that "O-bomb-thousands-of-innocent-people-back-into-Stone-Age" has done, especially to the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the rule of law, and the sovereignty and independence of this country. But he is one of the worst traitors and enemies of the state to be inflicted on this country, so this article is just more "blind-leading-the-blind" propaganda being foisted on "TruthOut" readers. Obama's agenda is to be used by evil to destroy this country. Thus, please give us all a break from such tripe.
Agency chiefs can inflict
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 23:35 — Anonymous (not verified)Agency chiefs can inflict enourmous damage. Like at the Justice Dept, there wasn't much change in one election. Since Government agencies appear to be set up to ensure corporate profit, let's consider a few of the "side effects" of corruption:
* Enable Major Oil Companies to threaten the entire gulf eco system
* Allow workers to die on the job
* Allow loan sharks to drive people into the ground
* Aid and abet criminal regimes in foreign theaters of war
etc

How could he have done
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 00:33 — Anonymous (not verified)How could he have done worse? Is Git Bay still open? It's ok for big Financials to commit control fraud? It's ok for the NSA to monitor/record everything? Is it ok for the Government to assasinate people (this also happened in the 1930s) without any trail or for "secret" reasons?
Neither war has ended, millions have lost their jobs, the administration is giving credibility to austerity measures (perhaps we will see SS gutted with D majority). The administration has done almost nothing to help homeowners duped by Wall Streets war against them. Habeus Corpus is still missing, Health care reform was written to ensure markets for insurance companies. Financial reform does little - most of the stronger regulations were defeated by D's!
I think there is a time, perhaps after people graduate from high school that the "President" is simply a face for the status quo. Some kids never grow up though, which is why this article garners the predictable back and forth between posters. I think some of us should be getting paid.

Mon, 07/19/2010 - 01:40 — HOWARD CHRISTOFERSEN MD (not verified)I continue to be amazed that so many people will offer an opinion and hide behind anonymity. "Why no Credit" and the comment following contain some good material but how much more weight they would carry if we knew the background of the authors?
I am a retired physician who has had the privilege of living and working in S. Africa and in the States. I have traveled in China, Cuba, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Scandinavia, England, Honduras, Porto Rico and widely through the states explaining mission work to members of the United Church of Christ. Also five return trips to S.A. I have also worked for 15 years in a private clinic , and on retiring from surgery, did 8 years as industrial physician for a steel mill.
Pres. Obama against great resistance by the party of "just say no" has made some achievements. In one year he has started to turn around the bad situations created by 8 years of government for the wealthy and the corporations. When I read reports from Non Profit Associations, I sense a feeling of great relief. (remember the first act Pres. Bush did was to cancel $34m to support women's clinics over seas for fear they would promote abortions. As a physician who has served overseas and stood by the bed of a woman dying of an antibiotic resistant infection from a "back Alley "abortion. that one act of his probably produced thousands of abortions as third world women were unable to get contraceptives). Pres. Obama quickly got rid of that ruling.
Please, give Pres. Obama a chance. Give him a Senate that cannot be stopped. See what happens when troops are withdrawn from Iraq and later from Afghanistan.
See that your Representative and Senators support Obey's, Share the Sacrifice Bill. Start taxing the rich to pay for the war as was done in WWII
AND PUT YOUR NAME WITH YOUR STATEMENT AND GIVE IT VALUE.

Mon, 07/19/2010 - 02:59 — Anonymous (not verified)I have a poem that will express my sentiments about President Barack Obama. It will also give you some idea of why he is being persecuted.
PRESIDENT OBAMA!
Highest office in the land won by one who said,
“Yes We Can”
He has certainly given us reason to be proud,
Every time he speaks, he mesmerizes the crowd.
He's the first African American to hold the office of President,
He will soon be inaugurated and become a “White House” resident.
He and his beautiful family are indeed a class act,
They will be a breath of fresh air in DC, that’s a fact.
Barack and Biden have strategically worked their way to the top,
When their plans are in place, they will be hard to stop.
As a proud member of the “Baby-Boomer” generation,
I praise God for raising him up for this Our Nation.
“One Nation under God, with Liberty and Justice for All.”
Obama has been anointed and appointed for such a time as this,
As long as he continues to follow God’s Lead, he can’t miss.
The implications and ramifications of this “Historic” event,
Are far-reaching for all and proves he was sent.
Now, when we say you can be "President of the United States"
The proof is in the “Election of 2008”.

Mon, 07/19/2010 - 03:06 — AngryMan (not verified)"Single-payer is off the table". Where are my constitutionally guaranteed rights? Where is justice for Valerie Plame and the Bush crime family? Where is REAL health insurance reform? Where is anything I voted for? I did not vote for half measures and corporate giveaways but that is what I got. Immunity for telecoms ... why? What they did was illegal. Wall Street got bailed out and I am sucking wind. Why are no Wall street a$$holes in jail? Where's my 401K money mother***kers? I am old and I need that money. You bailed out Wall Street in a single weekend. Months of arguing about whether people should get any help at all is about all I've seen. Which part about "don't screw the people" do you not understand? Why do you punish whistle-blowers and not investigate the horrendous crimes they have shown to you? As commander-in-chief, when do you plan to start commanding?
Would McCain have done better? That ship has sailed. It doesn't matter what McCain would have done. He lost ... end of story. It is a waste of time to fantasize what might have been. My concern it what is really being done here and now. So far, nothing that has been done is impressing me.
Look at all these messages. People are really pissed off. The problem is NOT that people do not understand. The problem is that people are sick and tired of corporate welfare while they go hungry and die for a lack of health care access. Obama himself said that 44,000 people a year die because they lack access to health care. Then why in hell is he waiting until 2014 for changes to take effect? Because this is all theater! There is no substance to any of it. The 2014 date was selected for maximal political impact and to help assure a reelection. 44,000 * 4 people will die in order to achieve a political goal. Well done Mr. President! Well done.
SCOTUS says corporations are persons. Then as a person, I demand to be treated like a corporation. I want my bailout money right now. I want a few billion dollars at zero interest so I can go to Vegas and spin the wheel. If corporations are equivalenced to persons, then the reciprocal must also be true. Gimme my damn money!

I want to add my support to
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 04:28 — theprogressiveanalyst (not verified)I want to add my support to those decrying the whiners and complainers. Some of the p0sters here are as divorced from reality as the tea partiers, or worse. Plus, they seem to have no knowledge of history. Politics has been called the art of the possible. I'm as progressive as anyone and have criticized Obama in the past for not getting as much as he can (see my blog posts, especially those grading Obama, theprogressiveanalyst.blogspot.com). However, when you put his achievements in historical context and in the perspective of the political environment, Obama's first 18 months have been better than anyone since FDR. One great advantage FDR had was that Hoover had screwed up so bad and things were so in the toilet when he took over that he (FDR)was given pretty much carte blanche by the electorate. In contrast, things just started to go really bad right before Obama took office and the conservative policies haven't been so completely discredited as they were in 1933.
With the GOP filibustering everything in the Senate, it has been much more difficult to get legislation through than what either LBJ or FDR faced. The economic elite has had a strangle hold over the country for the last 30 years, and it is going to take a long time and concerted effort by progressives to make a dent in that.
Remember Clinton adopted the Republican outlook that big government is the problem. As flawed as health care and financial reform are, at least they are initial steps in bringing about a paradigm shift, wherein the people can begin to see that government can solve problems and that the market requires regulation. Before real change can come, there has to be a change in the generally accepted political narrative. Obama's legislative accomplishments start us out on this road. I read a column today by neocon Charles Krautheimer and he seemed genuinely concerned that Obama's legislative accomplishments will accomplish this. When the neocons are worried, that's a good sign.
I guess I missed that
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 05:32 — AngryMan (not verified)I guess I missed that elementary school class on the process of government, Mr. Eastman. I thought that those elected were to serve the interests of "We The People". That isn't freakin' happening!
Why is the health insurance reform bill so long? It is necessary to be long so as to install all the loopholes that corporations will later drive a truck through and neuter the intended purpose. That also allows decades of injunctions that will prevent anything from going into effect as corporations sue to get out from under being responsible. Medicare Part E ... "everyone" would have taken about two sentences. We didn't get that did we? We didn't get that because the people whose interests were served were not "We The People". Stop telling others how stupid we are because we have "little understanding of the process of government". I understand from basic observation that the Wall Street bailout happened in about 3 tense days. Mountains can be moved if the will is there to do so. I see very little will to serve the people when at the outset, "single-payer is off the table". Like Bush, Obama had people (doctors and nurses) arrested when they exercised their right of free speech to condemn the conclusion that single-payer was off the table, when that is precisely what the people who voted for Obama wanted.
We know without a doubt that health care must be fairly close to non-profit or corporations will kill you in their pursuit of more profit. What about that do YOU not understand? The closest we could get to non-profit was single-payer. When that didn't happen there is no hope for honest reform. Apparently I am a "whiner with no appreciation for the actual difficulty of governance". That isn't my job. I helped to send Mr. Obama to represent my interests. The Patriot Act was not in my interest. Domestic spying is not in my interest. Not having transparency in government is not in my interest. Punishing whistle-blowers while ignoring murder is not in my interest. Failure to investigate crimes is not in my interest. Failure to place people's interests above the interests of corporations is not in my interest. Failure to even discuss single-payer was not in my interest.
The GOP is the party of "no". What effect would there have been to having no Republicans vote for single-payer? They voted against the crap we got! You cannot get less than zero votes. Get an up/down vote on single-payer and let those who voted against it suffer in the next election cycle.
When the votes aren't there you go with Plan B? No! When the votes aren't there from your own freakin' party you call those morons in and thump them! It's called kicking ass and taking names. If your own party cannot get with the program then the party is dysfunctional. You have to play hardball with with rogues.
Why did Pelosi, essentially at day-zero, say that single-payer was off the table? She did not do that in a vacuum! Whoever made that happen needs a come-to-Jesus talk.
Things take time. Well Todd, this country does not have another 30 years to wait for politicians to start representing the people. It will implode long before that happens. When 20% of people are unemployed or under employed, they don't have much to lose. A lot of really pissed off people with nothing to lose is not "a good thing".
Fix health care insurance properly and put it into effect right now, and Obama would be reelected in a landslide. Fail to do that in light of the instant Wall Street bailout, and I would start filling out my resume right now.
What Ronnie Raygun did to PATCO is what we must do to health insurance carriers: get rid of them! Why do they need to exist at all? They only skim profits from the misery of the sick and infirm. They add nothing to the equation except to make things cost more and deny coverage.

Mon, 07/19/2010 - 08:46 — Anonymous (not verified)Those who praise Obama for being a realist and condemn others for lack of political acumen seem to have missed our empty suit president's role in the heath care "debate." He and Rahm gave away the store to pharma, insurers and hospital executives very early on. There was no filibuster. He just wet himself every time one was mentioned, using the screen of bipartisanship to peddle corporate legislation. The principal aim was to have a bill, any bill, for which he could claim victory. He's claiming victory and the marching morons are falling in line.

Mon, 07/19/2010 - 09:58 — Anonymous (not verified)The deluded whiners against the so-called "whiners" live in such a fantasy world that there's no reasoning with them. You can list all of the far greater things that are wrong which Obama is NOT fixing, and never will, but they will just ignore it all. Even millions of innocent people being slaughtered abroad, and the fact that it isn't being stopped, as well as the fact that it isn't going to be stopped, doesn't even phase them; or they will claim that it supposedly does, much like the empty rhetoric of "O-fraud-a-thon", but they won't fight to end it. The mass-murder goes on and on and on, and the U.S. is being destroyed, right in front of their eyes, but they will keep supporting and defending the very "unitary executive" dictator who is doing the destroying, much like those who supported and defended Hitler as Germany was turned into a martial law police state. You better face that that is what is coming here if you don't face it RIGHT NOW.
"Neanderthal(s)" was the word I was trying to remember yesterday, but couldn't recall it at the time. That's what these mass-insane, fantasy world people are. They claim others are "stupid", while they say the most ignorant, deep in avoidance and denial, and stupid things that I've ever heard in the face of what is actually going on right in front of us. Things are truly getting worse and worse, and these Neanderthals really believe the fantasy that it's supposedly getting better. God help us if these fantasy world, so-called "progressives" don't wake the hell up, get mad as hell, and take this country back from the brink of hell. Because, if the vast majority of so-called "Americans" don't wake the hell up and very quickly become True Americans, there is going to be a hell on earth in the U.S. and the world that has never been experienced before. That is NOT "whining", idiots, that is a plain, hard, cold fact. So get real, real fast, or we're all fracked.

I'm so tired of these
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 14:38 — saneleft (not verified)I'm so tired of these caricatures of the healthcare plan. First off, it's *NOT* "Obamacare" as the right would have it. The legislation was crafted by, duh, the legislative branch. Second, the Right whines that it's "socialism" while the Far Left whines that it's just a gift to capitalist insurance entrepreneurs! So, which is it? Well, of course, neither. Both sides reduce the complex realities of the legislation to a mere sound byte and miss the irony that their bytes contradict one another.
One reason Obama doesn't get
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 14:48 — Anonymous (not verified)One reason Obama doesn't get much credit is that most of what he's done is too superficial or fleeting to really fix the problems . For example, it's not true that Democrats have wanted "expansion" of the current health insurance system for decades. What they have wanted is replacing the current system with one that works. Replacing a profit-driven health insurance system with a single payer system is very different from expanding the current broken system by forcing people to buy private insurance and paying for much of the expansion with tax dollars.
Financial reform may be "sweeping", but once again when the system needed to be changed in fundamental ways, the bill Congress produced doesn't do this. In both of these cases Congress depends on regulators, which can easily gotten around, and regulators, who can easily be replaced with people who heavily favor the industries they are supposed to regulate.
Our country faces the greatest threat to its national security in history, and Obama's response so far has been to put a small percentage of the stimulus money into protecting us from global warming. It's true that he can't do many things without Congress, and Congress has really dropped the ball on all these issues. But as commander in chief, it's Obama's responsibility to protect us, and he already has the authority to make truly sweeping changes, based on the Clean Air and Clean Water acts and his responsibility to protect us.
He is abdicating his responsibility as much as Congress is, because he is not being a real leader, but just following Congress, who follow what their biggest donors want them to do. Yes, he's still much better than Bush, but so far he is not the leader we need at this time.

I rest my case. You prove the idiocy of people like yourself. As someone else commented, you don't learn from history, particularly that it CAN and likely will be repeated, including in the U.S. where deniers like yourself falsely believe that it supposedly can't happen here. But just because our present-day fascist dictators put a "pretty face" on their fascism, and even though their "faces" aren't as ugly as the likes of Hitler, doesn't mean they are any less fascist dictators. Yes, they are more difficult to see through by the "rose-colored-fantasy-world-sheeple-crowd" like yourself; but, if people face the reality of what is really going on, they can see through these monster wolves in sheep's clothing who work for the international mobster, bankster, fraudster globalists who are destroying our entire country and world as they've been working towards for decades, if not for centuries.
Even though most "Americans" are racists, I am probably one of the least racist people commenting here; and I'm not a "Tea Partier", nor "right-wing". I study every day what is really going on; and, as a result, I see through the "pretty-face" globalist puppets like Obama being used as dictators to destroy all the liberty(ies) and freedom(s) we used to hold dear in the U.S., but which most "Americans" now know little or nothing about; and, therefore, have no "non-rose-colored-lens" to accurately judge what is and is not really going on. That is all by design so they are blind to, and blindsided by, what is really happening; and it's working like a charm, as shown by the ignorance to what is really happening of idiots like yourself. Wake up and completely face the corporate-fascist takeover, all of you moronic deniers and fantasy world enthusiasts who are all blinder than bats!

Btw, "separate but equal"
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 17:40 — Anonymous (not verified)Btw, "separate but equal" means that all three branches of the U.S. government have an equal level of power. It does NOT mean that the Executive Branch (the Presidency) has ANY authority to usurp or carry out the duties of the Legislative Branch (the Congress); in fact, it means that they do NOT have such authority because Congress is supposed to be separate from the Executive Branch, and vise versa.
It is Congress' duty to legislate, or draft and make the laws, NOT the Presidency; but, today, we have a "unitary executive" which IS unconstitutionally usurping the power delegated to Congress alone to be the lawmakers, by itself drafting and enacting unconstitutional, so-called "laws, many if not most of which contradict and violate the Constitution and the laws of both the Legislative Branch (Congress) AND the Judicial Branch (the U.S. Supreme Court), which is treason that all such "Presidents" and other occupiers of the White House MUST, not simply "can", be impeached under the impeachment DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS of the U.S. Constitution, for "high crimes" against the People of the United States.
We, the People CANNOT allow this, and the failure to impeach all such traitors, to continue; and it is our responsibility to at least try to put a stop to it, and see to it that they are impeached as REQUIRED by the U.S. Constitution.

Mon, 07/19/2010 - 21:42 — Hank (not verified)This series of posts is rather disappointing, but what should we expect after such a delusional article.
Obama's huge campaign contributions from the same interests that normally support Republicans should have alerted us to the fact that he is nothing more than a hired one-term stand-in to take all the blame for war, recession, business fraud, environmental disasters, loss of rights, etc. Why do you think he was so anxious to go to war, so openly contradicted his campaign promises, so blatantly threw key constituencies under his bus, and devised legislation that is almost guaranteed to turn out badly. In 2012, liberated from their past by Obama's blatant assumption of responsibility of all their mistakes, the Republicans can return and get back to their unadulterated rape and pillage.
In the meantime, I first wish liberal apologist would stop inferring that the healthcare bill, financial reform, Copenhagen, the energy bill, or any other piece of special interest-authored legislation as anything but the maximum business thought they could put over on us. Also, please stop this "McCain and Palin would have been worse" stuff. Of course they would have been worse, but they were put there to not win. The Republicans had already hired Obama to use the four years of his term to take responsibility for all their mistakes. I guarantee you a more respectable Republican ticket will appear in 2012 to do us in once and for all.
Meanwhile, back in reality
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 22:50 — Anonymous (not verified)Meanwhile, back in reality (a place some posters should consider visiting some time):
WASHINGTON — President Obama called on Congress on Monday to pass an extension of unemployment benefits, and leveled a sharp critique against Republican senators who have stopped passage of a bill that would give some relief to out-of-work Americans.... Mr. Obama also urged the Senate to approve a package of tax cuts and an expansion of lending to small businesses. “We all have to continue our efforts to do everything in our power to spur growth and hiring,” Mr. Obama said at the White House.... Mr. Obama sharply criticized Republicans who have several times in the past month voted against bringing an unemployment extension bill to the Senate floor. “After years of championing policies that turned a record surplus into a massive deficit, the same people who didn’t have any problem spending hundreds of billions of dollars on tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans are now saying we shouldn’t offer relief to middle-class Americans like Jim or Leslie or Denise, who really need help,” Mr. Obama said, referring to the three people who stood with him in the Rose Garden, brought to Washington by the White House to help illustrate the president’s point.

Obama's done a lot and why
Tue, 07/20/2010 - 14:24 — Logan Anderson (not verified)Obama's done a lot and why doesn't he did more credit for it? Easy to answer that! He is hurling us into debt at the rate of 5 billion more a day than we are taking in!!!!!! That is incompetence! Any home owner or business knows that's the path to bankruptcy! Fiscal insanity! Every dollar he overspends is making the dollars in your pocket worth less. It is nothing short of stealing!!! It is overspending that got us into this financial nightmare, with the prospect of meltdown hanging over our heads day and night! Obama is just continuing the same fiscal insanity that caused the problems in the first place. Credit?
And his health care bill is an outrage! Making criminals of those who choose not to participate!! It will cost trillions more than they have projected, as is always the case with government estimates.
Taking America down the path to socialism? Yes, he deserves credit for that!
Bush made all these executive decrees that greatly curtailed our freedoms and gutted the Constitution - Obama has left them all standing!
He made promises to get us out of the wars and did not keep his word, but keeps expanding the empire, then talks of cuts to Social Security! They stole two trillion from Social Security, just used it as a slush fund.
He promised that the taxes would not be raised on anyone making $250,000. or less. He reneged on that promise just like he did on all the others.
Don't make me laugh. This president is ruining this country and I hope the voters remove him from office - he should be impeached for the damage he has done to the republic! He is inept.

Realistically speaking, Obama is the most progressive president in recent history. But he has to work within a constricting framework that necessitates compromise--and it simply takes a good bit of time to get things done. The Left, which is always prone to discouragement, pessimism, and throwing in the towel way too soon, needs to understand that more clearly. Remind me what the REALISTIC alternative to Obama is? Certainly not the candidate that will be on the GOP ticket in 2012. I'm in this fight against the right wing for the long haul, and I'm supporting President Obama--with qualifications but without apologies.

Who in the hell are you
Wed, 07/21/2010 - 00:52 — Anonymous-Non-Sheeple (not verified)Who in the hell are you talking to, "Floresta"? I've probably written far more political letters and signed more political petitions than you ever have. Most people don't want to appear to be bragging about how much they do, so you should know that that is why I and many others don't list their accomplishments, or attempted accomplishments. I and they have no ego about it. They know it's the least they can do; and when people like yourself attack them not knowing them or what they do or don't do, they know that you're probably a coward who doesn't do hardly anything politically, or at least with regards to what is really going on, because most people like you don't know what's really going on, and won't face it; or, for that matter, even look at any, or much of any, of the great deal of evidence about what's really going on. No, people like yourself just continue to live in avoidance and denial of reality, and attack others for speaking about that reality, falsely calling it "whining", being "negative", and/or "complain(ing)", etcetera. You're the one who truly needs to grow up, AND WAKE UP, and stop tearing down those who are simply trying to tell whole truth of what is really going on, and wake others up to it!
Now, what are you going to do next, or for an encore? Defend mass-criminal and traitor Obama and fraudulently claim that he's supposedly done a lot of good, swallowing the fraud that is Obama, as well as his fraudulent, evil actions as being "good", like this article and many of the commenters here? Please, you blind, deep in avoidance and denial, living in a fantasy world people, and believers in lies, stop excusing and enabling such lying international criminals and traitors like Obama who are destroying our country and world, and mass-murdering countless numbers of innocent civilians. Stop ignoring facts that make you feel uncomfortable, particularly when they are so huge that you can't believe that they're true. The tons of evidence that proves they are true true, is out there, but you have probably refused to listen to it like most so-successfully brainwashed, so-called "patriotic 'Americans'" who have little or no idea what True Patriotism, and being a True American, really means. The True Americans and True Patriots are putting their very lives on the line, and ARE trying to "be the change that (they) want to see in the world", but it's a safe bet that you're not, that you won't, and that you probably never will, because you can't stand hearing and facing the real truth, and/or the most important truth(s), of what is really going on, and what your true duties and responsibilities are in regards to it, such as putting your life on the line. Until you put your life on the line, please shut the hell up!
No, the first time the government visited you for your completely Constitutional, legal, peaceful, and non-violent True Patriotism and Americanism, would probably get you scurrying to lick the "jackboots" of the modern-day "Gestapo", so far exercising mostly "soft-fascism", or "soft- oppression and repression", and kissing the government's behind from then on to keep from being falsely called a "terrorist" and visited again, or worse. You live in "la-la-land", with blinders and rose-colored glasses on, and you have little or no idea how bad things really are; and, somehow, you subconsciously and/or unconsciously think that if you ignore it, it will supposedly just go away and get better without you doing anything, or much of anything about it. So don't talk to me and the others here who are truly facing what's really going on, and really trying to do something about it as much as they can, like we're supposedly the idiots and morons that you are. You're the cowards and traitors, not us. We are the True Patriots and True Americans that you have little or no clue about. Therefore, become (a) True American(s) and True Patriot(s) yourself(ves), and put a complete end to all of your ignorance.

Obama's 'greatest'
Wed, 07/21/2010 - 17:52 — Juliania (not verified)Obama's 'greatest' accomplishment has been to bring a dead Republican party back to life. That has been his goal for his entire term so far. There has to be a Republican Party in order for Obama to look like a liberal, which he is not.
He was opposed to a viable healthcare option from the start of the so-called debate. That is the clearest evidence that he is not and never was what the McClatchy article pretends he is. Sad, when McClatchy in past days was to be respected for its brave reporting.
It does seem that the only hope Democrats have these days is for the Republicans to be so much worse by contrast. It was scary to them when the election seemed to take away that foil. They need a 'worse than' in order to be 'better than', but 'better than' is increasingly untenable, as the comments here show.
Doesn't matter if anonymous or not; the truth is the truth.

Wed, 07/21/2010 - 18:36 — RED PILL (not verified)Dear Steven,
I find it a difficult task to place a positive connotation on a political reform that consists of a panel of regulators chosen by the top six banks that hold share in the privately owned federal reserve. A Non reviewable panel, with as the Washington post calls "near autonomy". With near total control of every aspect of your financial life down to the debit card transaction. The panel appointed by the banks the top six. (do the research)(who ownes stock in the private federal Reserve?) has NO CONGRESSIONAL OVERSIGHT. Couple that with the fact that free market in health care has been eradicated. The patriot act was re-signed and expanded, torture and secret rendition okay'ed.

Wed, 07/21/2010 - 18:38 — Sliderossian (not verified)I keep hearing that anyone who thinks Obama is a dismal failure is indistinguishable from the ignorant blathering Teabaggers.
I get called anti-American because I believe it is my duty as a citizen to point out what's wrong, regardless of party or prettied words.
I get called racist because I think the president, who just happens to be a black man, is totally incompetent and is crushing the hopes and aspirations of millions of Amercians who voted for him by triangulating and parsing and processing data instead of doing what's right.
The judgments that Obama "is
Wed, 07/21/2010 - 19:14 — saneleft (not verified)The judgments that Obama "is a dismal failure" and is "totally incompetent" are way off the mark by any measure, so it's no wonder you receive criticism in return for the criticism you offer. You deserve it.
Compare Obama's record to that of past presidents. Factor in the total obstructionism of GOP and the mass disinformation campaigns of Faux News & right-wing radio. Keep in mind that the vested military and corporate interests did not vanish in a puff of smoke when Obama was elected. In light of all this it's remarkable Obama has accomplished as much as he has.
This pattern, btw, repeats itself with every president on both sides. A guy is elected and is supposed to waive his magic wand to change the world to be exactly the way certain idealists on either side want it to be. Then, reality sets in. The other side is still there, fighting against the new president's agenda. Things take time. Getting things done in this system is difficult (by design). Many things are beyond the president's control, yet he gets blamed for them anyways. The administration has to consider the next election and the way "independents" in this country blow with the wind.
And so the naive idealists, unprepared for the realities of actual governance, jump ship and by doing so help the other side take power again.
"SaneLeft", you really ought
Wed, 07/21/2010 - 22:36 — Anonymous-Non-Sheeple (not verified)"SaneLeft", you really ought to go look in the mirror; because you are the one, among many others here, who is naive. You still have the naivety of believing in the false "left-right paradigm", and that there's supposedly a difference between the "DemoCONS" and the "RepugnantCONS, even though almost all of them are now globalist corporate-fascist traitors to God, the U.S., the Constitution, and the entire world. You are also naive enough to still believe that Obama supposedly wasn't selected to do exactly what he's doing, finishing this country off and bringing in the dystopian, draconian, totalitarian enslavement of the entire globe under the "New World Order (NWO)".
In his speech in Berlin, Germany to about 200,000 fanatical German fans in July 2008, Obama spoke of this "new world" and use code words for how and why we must supposedly do away with "walls", meaning national borders and sovereignty; which, in the context of the U.S., is treason against the U.S. Constitution, which holds that we, as a country, must NEVER give up our sovereignty and independence; and that, as the Founders said, if we do so it will be our downfall. That stand of Obama's, as a puppet of the globalists and the "NWO", is not "sane leftyism". It is insanity to bring about an illusory world unity that will be the downfall of not only the U.S., but also of the entire world.
WAKE UP, FANATICS!!!!! YOU, AS SHEEP, OSTRICHES AND LEMMINGS, ARE BEING LED OFF THE EDGE OF THE CLIFF BY THE COMPLETELY TRAITOROUS, TYRANNICAL AND DESPOTIC GLOBALIST "PIED PIPERS"!!!!!
There WILL be a so-called
Wed, 07/21/2010 - 23:00 — Anonymous-Non-Sheeple (not verified)There WILL be a so-called "unity" of sorts, but it will be nothing but unity with evil and worldwide enslavement, made to appear to be for "out best good". Either you bow down to the NWO and their totalitarian theocratic police state, and their one-world counterfeit "Christian" religion and government, or else you will be exterminated as "heretics", "enemies of the state", "threats to national security", "communists", perpetrators of "perceived threatening conduct" (under the so-called "U.S.A. P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act"), "unprivileged enemy belligerents", "unlawful enemy combatants", etc. Wake up and completely face the neo-theocratic corporate-fascism; stand up against it as is your God-given, Constitution-bestowed, world-citizen-granted DUTY to do; and don't bow down this extreme evil in the guise of "good", in any way, shape, form or fashion whatsoever!
To Annonsheeple, WTF! Dude,
Thu, 07/22/2010 - 16:59 — Floresta (not verified)To Annonsheeple, WTF! Dude, I have been a political activist since the 70's. I am also an "old broad". I am NOT bragging, but simply pointing out that the endless bitch, bitch, bitching continues to feed the 'negative mind' pathways and that this kind of behaviour reinforces them, making the real efforts to shift the effing paradigm much more difficult and seemingly hopeless. Putting one's efforts into constructive action is a whole 'nuther thang, my dear.
I also understand that the processes of govt are not really understood by most of the people in this nation, kindly pointed out in a few other posts here. The healthcare bill, for example is far, far, from perfect, so start there, and work to get the changes that you and I want. The banking bill ain't perfect either, but is is a place to start!!!
The laws crafted in this country are living breathing documents; help change the ones that you don't like!
Democracy, or more precisely, a democratic republic does not function for the greatest good of all concerned unless the people participate.
Do you caucus? Are you active in crafting local policy where you live? Do you make phone calls to your elected officials and remind them that they in fact work for you? Write letter?
Mr Obama is far from perfect, but as the article points out, some things have changed for the better and to me, that is worth noting, despite the things that have yet to be done.
Like I alluded to, Floresta,
Thu, 07/22/2010 - 19:43 — Anonymous-Non-Sheeple (not verified)Like I alluded to, Floresta, you are one of the people who lives in a fantasy world and has little or no idea what is really going on, and who is really behind it all, nor about what they're seeking to bring about. When the latter is pointed out to you and your ilk, you just ignore it and write it off as "extremism", "hysteria", "paranoia", "pessimism", "negative thinking", etc. Thus your so-called "constructive action" is almost completely a waste of time, when what you should be doing in waking people up to what I seek to wake people up to, and then taking far more pointed and truly constructive, or at least truly constructive attempted, action(s) against all of that. Because, if we don't stop the NWO, all of the "political activism" of yourself and your kind is like sticking a very small pin in a huge beast hoping to kill it; and it will, of course, be a less than worthless attempt to overcome that huge beast.
I do what I can as a fully physically disabled person who doesn't drive anymore, and I won't get involved with blind-to-the-much-bigger-picture-and-danger "activists" other than to support the causes of the ACLU, Amnesty International (AI), and National Lawyers Guild (NLG), etc., that I agree with, being that I am a bonafide member in good standing of all of them and then some (a member of the NLG as a fully physically disabled former legal worker). And I am involved in a lot more than that, again as much as I am able to be considering the fact that I am seriously physically disabled with three immune-compromising diseases, Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS), Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS), and Lyme Disease (LD); but I will not count my so-called "good works" any more than that, as that is not the point, and I don't feel that I have anything to brag about in any way whatsoever.
This is what Obama is
Thu, 07/22/2010 - 21:35 — Anonymous-Non-Sheeple (not verified)This is what Obama is continuing that you know little or nothing about, people, which "TruthOut" won't publish [and there are literally "tons" of articles like this one that tell it like it is, by many writers who give the real, and the whole, story about what is going on---but most of you "liberals" and/or "progressives" will not read them even if you knew (and/or know) of their existence (while reading this article, if you do read it, substitute the name "Obama" for "Bush")]:
http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig11/valentine10.1.html
[Or, if you do read them (or this one), you won't believe that these are the FACTS, and that this is TRULY the very real danger that we are ALL in RIGHT NOW. You've been fooled into believe "Bush is over", and/or that what he did and was trying to do is supposedly over; but it is NOT over by any stretch of the imagination. Obama has not overturned ANY of it, and he is NOT going to. Those who are given the power(s) of dictators do not relinquish them, and he is being used to cement the "state of emergency", "national security state", "repression of dissent (and doing away with the Bill of Rights)" apparatus into place more and more. Very soon, true political activists like myself are going to be "taken away", "disappeared", "indefinitely detained", etc., for simply doing nothing but non-violently fulfilling our duty(ies) to stand up against the slave state with no True Freedom(s) that the U.S. has become, and is becoming more and more by the day. And most people like you, and those who run sites like TruthOut's, will bow down, shut up, and do nothing about the completely innocent True Activists who will have by then been interned, many if not most of whom will in all likelihood be murdered because they will not bow down. In fact, many of you will inform on and turn in the True Activists to the government to be eradicated.]

Tue, 07/27/2010 - 20:10 — Frances in California Again (not verified)Dear AngryMan: As a rapidly aging, underemployed American woman, I can readily agree with your ire over the Health Care so-called-reform debacle. That said, I must take issue with your complaints about "not getting what you voted for". Elections are not shopping websites; your guys in Washington are your Senators (only one of mine is really "mine") and your House Rep, not the President. Bug them about what's not been delivered. And run for Insurance Commissioner in your state; they probably need your ideas very badly.
Idiocy, blindness and denial
Wed, 07/28/2010 - 04:16 — Anonymous-Non-Sheeple (not verified)Idiocy, blindness and denial really are "bliss", aren't they Frances. One day very soon when it's far too late, you'll realize that I was right. It's not important that I personally was right, but that what I'm saying is right. But people who live in a fantasy world like yourself, just can't see it.
So, because I'm disabled and CAN'T work, my life supposedly doesn't count. What a bigot you are. For anyone who has the ability to correctly see through people, you are the one who is shooting herself in the foot. But you are of course free to keep proving what an ignorant fool you are.
